Question No. 1(a)

 What is the transmission time of a packet sent by a station if the length of the packet is 1 MB and the bandwidth of the channel is 200 Kbps?

Question No. 1(b)

There is a file of size 2 MB. How long does it take to download this file using a 1-Mbps channel?

Question No. 1(c)

If the bandwidth of the channel is 5 Kbps, how long does it take to send a frame of 100,000 bits out of this device?

Question No. 2

Identify the proper type of transmission mode for each of the following devices.

Device

FM Radio

Telephone conversations

Video Conferencing

TV broadcast

Walkie-Talkie

Solution:

Question No. 1(a):

The transmission time of a packet can be calculated using the following formula:

Transmission time = Packet length / Bandwidth

Where:

Packet length = 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes

Bandwidth = 200 Kbps = 200,000 bits per second

To convert the packet length from bytes to bits, we need to multiply it by 8:

Packet length = 1,000,000 x 8 = 8,000,000 bits

Substituting the values in the formula:

Transmission time = 8,000,000 bits / 200,000 bits per second

Transmission time = 40 seconds

Therefore, the transmission time of a packet sent by a station is 40 seconds.

Question No. 1(b):

The time taken to download a file can be calculated using the following formula:

Time taken = File size / Channel bandwidth

Where:

File size = 2 MB = 2,000,000 bytes

Channel bandwidth = 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits per second

To convert the file size from bytes to bits, we need to multiply it by 8:

File size = 2,000,000 x 8 = 16,000,000 bits

Substituting the values in the formula:

Time taken = 16,000,000 bits / 1,000,000 bits per second

Time taken = 16 seconds

Therefore, it will take 16 seconds to download the file using a 1-Mbps channel.

Question No. 1(c):

The time taken to send a frame can be calculated using the following formula:

Time taken = Frame size / Bandwidth

Where:

Frame size = 100,000 bits

Bandwidth = 5 Kbps = 5,000 bits per second

Substituting the values in the formula:

Time taken = 100,000 bits / 5,000 bits per second

Time taken = 20 seconds

Therefore, it will take 20 seconds to send a frame of 100,000 bits out of this device.

Question No. 2:

Transmission mode is the way data is transmitted between two devices in a network. There are three types of transmission modes: simplex, half-duplex, and full-duplex.

The proper type of transmission mode for each of the following devices is:

FM Radio: simplex

Telephone conversations: full-duplex

Video Conferencing: full-duplex

TV broadcast: simplex

Walkie-Talkie: half-duplex

Explanation:

Simplex transmission mode is used when data is transmitted in only one direction. In this mode, the sender sends the data, and the receiver receives it. Examples of simplex transmission include FM radio and TV broadcast.

Half-duplex transmission mode is used when data can be transmitted in both directions, but not simultaneously. In this mode, the sender can transmit data, and the receiver can receive it. After the sender finishes transmitting, the receiver can send data. Examples of half-duplex transmission include walkie-talkies.

Full-duplex transmission mode is used when data can be transmitted in both directions simultaneously. In this mode, both the sender and the receiver can send and receive data at the same time. Examples of full-duplex transmission include telephone conversations and video conferencing.
